The AirLife incentive spirometer is a, clear plastic device designed to help patients perform deep breathing exercises, strengthening lungs and preventing pneumonia, especially after surgery. It features a volumetric design with an adjustable goal indicator, flexible tubing, and a mouthpiece, facilitating slow, deep breaths.
Key Features of the AirLife Incentive Spirometer
- Volumetric Measurement: Precisely measures the volume of air inhaled to track progress.
- Visual Feedback: A piston and indicator show if the patient is breathing in at the correct speed and depth.
- Adjustable Goal Marker: Allows healthcare providers to set specific, achievable volume targets.
- Dual-Sided Calibration: Clearly visible numbers on both sides for easy reading.
How to Use the AirLife Incentive Spirometer
- Positioning: Sit upright in a chair or bed to maximize lung capacity.
- Initial Setup: Hold the device upright and set the goal indicator to the level prescribed by your therapist.
- Inhalation: Exhale normally, then place the mouthpiece in your mouth, sealing your lips tightly around it.
- Deep Breath: Breathe in slowly and as deeply as possible. The piston should rise, and the indicator should stay within the "target" zone (usually marked by a blue, ball, or arrow).
- Hold: Hold your breath for 3 to 5 seconds (or as long as comfortable) to keep the piston at the highest level.
- Exhale: Remove the mouthpiece and exhale slowly.
- Repetition: Rest, then repeat 10 times every hour while awake.
- Cough: Coughing after the set of 10 breaths helps clear mucus.
Tips and Precautions
- Avoid Blowing: Never blow into the device; only inhale, unless instructed otherwise.
- Dizziness: If you feel lightheaded, stop and take a few normal breaths.
- Pain Relief: If you have a chest or abdominal incision, hug a pillow against your stomach while using the device.
- Safety: The device is designed for single-patient use.
